"I drew these comics in high school during the mid-1980’s. I was a pretty big fuck-up back then, both socially and fashion-wise. The cover photo is from 1984, my first year of high school. I was trying to be metal, but my hair was too straight and stringy (I washed it too often) and it curled up daintily at the ends, looking more like Mary Tyler Moore than Metallica. I was about two months from shaving and had a wispy pubescent mustache; I also had a leather jacket, but it was the wrong kind of leather jacket. I couldn’t understand why people kept asking me if I liked Prince.
The comic is a 40+ page continuous epic narrative revolving around a protagonist named Melvin, a recent high school dropout making his way through a hostile environment of cops, jocks, skinheads, army recruiters, punks, preppies, Ku Klux Klan members, and other such characters culled from everyday experience growing up in North Carolina."
