Title:Fear Is The World
Artist:Atariame
Format:Tape
Label:Constellation Tatsu
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Synth-Pop, Avant-Folk, Ambient, Singer/Songwriter, Misc Asia & Middle East
Price: €6,90 EU (incl. VAT) €5,80 non-EU

This is a collection of songs I recorded during cold, dark and windy winter of 2016-17, under grey and white sky without sun in St. Petersburg.

"“There is a story about one of the moods I love in music,” says Russian singer, songwriter, and musician Atariame. “It’s that feeling when you are desperately running fast in the street, or when you are trembling and shaking from emotional overflow. I often make songs that make me feel this way. It is emotionally tiresome, but it feels like a whole new life.”

When encountering Atariame’s music, desperation and trembling might not be the first things that come to mind. The songs on her new tape, Fear is the World, are dreamy and meditative, replete with floating synths, fluid guitar, and her airy, reverberant voice. But give each track time to sink in, and tense undercurrents emerge. There’s even something eerie about the way she unspools her pieces as if she’s unleashing ghosts—it’s enough that the tape easily earns its name.

For Atariame, the title Fear of the World has personal resonance too. It refers in part to her tendency to stay indoors during the severe winters of her Russian home city. “St. Petersburg’s environment is aggressive,” she explains. “It’s cold, no sun. Lots of people smoke cigarettes just next to you, and there are parked cars everywhere.” Though she’s friendly with some close-by musicians and occasionally does mixes for local radio, she’s most comfortable working in isolation.

Fear of the World is also about confronting internal fears, which can be as frightening as anything outside. “I write about my personal issues, and I am quite easily scared,” Atariame explains. “Thanks to feminist community websites and my talks with friends, I got rid of some of my doubts, and now I know that there’s no shame in feeling like I missed out on my youth, feeling not pretty enough all the time, or worrying about not being liked by everyone. These things used to be very important for me. So I collected it all and made an album out of it.”

The result is songs that, while not exactly cinematic, do conjure a phantom visual component. “When I record, I have certain pictures in my head for every mix,” Atariame admits. “I think of colors and objects that the tracks’ details might resemble. Like, there has to be a transparent voice, a feather and glass, violet and shaggy synth, and guitar like a spider’s web.” Her singing usually comes last in that mix; she’ll often record five or six vocal takes and then layer them into the music. “I put [my voice] in different surroundings, like taking a photo of a teddy bear in every new country you visit,” she says. “I’d like to put it into industrial or hip-hop or techno music, as well.”

Atariame got into music by studying violin in school, though she admits she wasn’t sure why—and neither were her parents nor tutors. “I usually skipped the lessons and stayed at home and played guitar,” she says. “At that time, music lessons and punk rock seemed not to be connected in any way.” She’s now even more devoted to writing and playing, but she still maintains a day job, and seems to thrive off that dichotomy. “Once I said to myself that if I had a second life, I’d like to be a musician, that’s how I understood it,” she asserts. Judging by the levels of beauty and intrigue on Fear of The World, Atariame made the right decision."

Title:Detour 005
Artist:Doc Sleep
Format:LP
Label:Detour
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Techno, Misc Berlin
Price: €12,00 EU (incl. VAT) €10,08 non-EU

"Doc Sleep hails from the Midwest, most notably Minneapolis, a small city that takes techno seriously (just ask its most famous ambassador: DVS1), but cut her teeth in San Francisco, where she spent nearly a decade building her skills as a DJ. Last year she relocated to Berlin, where she became a resident of ://about blank's female-, queer-, POC-centered Room 4 Resistance party while putting in serious work in the studio.

DETOUR005 is the result — Doc Sleep's first solo release. On this record, she brings all her influences to bear: "I purposely tried to keep things a bit rough around the edges without losing sight of my Midwestern pragmatism — keeping things real on the dancefloor," she explains.

From minute one, it's clear that she succeeded. Its first offering, "Yr. Esq." insufflates the ghost of piano house into the body of dub techno. ("I wanted to showcase diversity: I often mix genres when DJing and wanted this release to reflect that," she says.) "Geospatial" leans minimal, focused on a barely-there synth lead that worms its way throughout. The B-side opens with "Hydroplane," the record's moodiest joint, featuring a simple, delicate synthesizer riff that's impossible to forget. It closes with "Considered Equation," a warm, posi-vibe jam that recalls shades of Orbital.

Speaking about her present moment in Berlin, Doc Sleep says: "I find it very rewarding to work to elevate and create community, whether it's through our party [Room 4 Resistance], the label [Jacktone Records], or my own productions. This is where I am at this point in my career and life and what I want to do moving forward." DETOUR005 is a sonic encapsulation of Doc Sleep's ethos, and an essential techno record."

Title:Inter
Artist:Burnet207
Format:Tape
Label:Jacktone Records
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Electro, Techno
Price: €7,80 EU (incl. VAT) €6,55 non-EU

"Jacktone is no stranger to concept albums (Lavender's "Mystique Youth" and "Horizons Beneath the Surface"), but with burnet207's "Inter", spread across 20 tracks, we enter a digital soundtrack of VR prototypes and fragmented motion, navigating a computerized world on a gridded map made of restrictive algorithms.

"My immediate reaction upon first listen: Oh, this sounds like Drexciya or Kraftwerk. (Which is about as fine an initial reaction as one could ask for, as most seasoned techno fans would concur.) Inter possesses an elemental simplicity in its sound design that places it firmly within the pantheon of these archetypical techno greats." - SF Weekly

"Its intention was...to stimulate and challenge the listener with the whole; the sounds are sterile but warm, the grooves are repetitive but catchy, the image is simple but complex, all pulsating with geometric precision, sincerity and audible love of a good electro bleep. As emotional as it is confrontational – the duality of it, the enthusiastic pupil and the strict teacher." - AltVenger

Calling to mind stripped-back 80s EBM, early industrial (Portion Control, Front 242, Chris & Cosey), classic electro, and even Kraftwerk computer music, burnet207 used minimal gear and effects processing to create the fascinating world of "Inter", where all track lengths and tempos are equal, titles denote units of measurement and visuals are based on robot and machine catalogs."

Mastered by Ben Versluis.
Artwork by burnet207 & Darren Cutlip.

Title:~
Artist:Odi Me
Format:Tape
Label:Jacktone Records
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Ambient, Modern Psych, Breakbeats, Electro-Acoustic
Price: €7,80 EU (incl. VAT) €6,55 non-EU

"odi me's album is simply titled "~" and spans 60 minutes across 6 tracks. It's at times a challenging listen, as well as a rewarding and beautiful meditation on noise, resonance, feedback, and silence. Using only a few instruments and machines to achieve her sound, the album features submerged drum machines, acoustic bass, Oakland field recordings, and feedback captured through manipulating 1/8th inch wires and coils."

From Machine Funk Savantage:
"The final Jacktone Records release of 2015 comes from odi me and it's a pretty special one. Simply titled "~", it spans 60 minutes of ambient soundscapes, droney & industrial noise and lots of distortion across only six tracks. It's at times a challenging but overall a rewarding listen if you're in the right mood with an open mind. I'd also imagine it would sound incredible as part of a live set.
The track "Bent Up" is maybe the most accessible due to its fairly straight drum rhythm. There's lots going on to keep it very interesting though, such as the vocal samples and the building distortion. Incredibly atmospheric stuff! If you're into more leftfield electronica, don't miss this release."

From Aquarius Records, SF:
"Long alien-ish instrumentals constructed from cinematic interplanetary drones, dark new-agey soundscapes and hazy field recordings of crowds and static, that occasionally unfurl in deep techno pulses, but take their time building up from slow drawn out throbbing textural bursts. Meditative and yet rather menacing as well."

Title:Viscous Positions
Artist:Isabella
Format:Tape
Label:Jacktone Records
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Electro, Acid House
Price: €7,80 EU (incl. VAT) €6,55 non-EU

"On Viscous Positions, Boston-based producer Isabella unleashes raw analogue techno with an emphasis on the acidic. There’s plenty of gurgling Roland TB-303 goodness to be had, but each of these tracks also carries a sinister edge that stings in just the right way." - Fact Mag, July 2016

"Our 15th release is a 9-track album called "Viscous Positions" from Boston-based, Isabella. A common thread of hardware experimentalism connects each track, as the release moves seamlessly from warehouse techno, classic electro and 303-acid to eerie/spacey leftfield atmospherics.

Tracks like "Cloying Traces" and "Mu/timode" showcase her skill with melody and classic pads, while "Schuld" is driven by a crunchy acid bassline peppered with push/pull percussion and "Cheap Acid Boots" - with its playful vocal sample - is destined for a sweaty dance floor."

Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Electro, Disco, Techno
Price: €7,80 EU (incl. VAT) €6,55 non-EU

"CB-R offers a unique and stripped-back take on techno, revelling in filters and washes, push-pull dynamics, slowly-evolving dub chords, textured soundscapes and reverbed percussion.

“CB-R is a master of the craft, a dub artist in the tradition of M5, who can wring emotion from minimal instrumentation that he employs with incredible restraint and a laser-like attention to each and every detail.”

The tracks on “Obstructed Transmission” vary in intensity, from the late-night deep dives of Visibility Zero-Zero and Colmillo, to the powerful build and release of Wavelengths, as well as the effortlessly-shifting restraint of the title track, Obstructed Transmission.

CB-R aka Bret Winans is an extended member of Brooklyn’s fabled Confused House crew and runs his own label called S//P//A. His first solo release, Inside Existence received great attention in XLR8R, as did his work with his brother, Ben Winans aka Roche, on their Samuel Max project."

Title:Channel
Artist:Loren Steele
Format:LP
Label:Jacktone Records
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Techno
Price: €12,00 EU (incl. VAT) €10,08 non-EU

"We're excited to announce our latest release and first vinyl of the year: a 5-track EP titled Channel from rising house producer, Loren Steele.

The EP from San Francisco-based Steele is comprised of four original tracks, plus a sprawling psychedelic remix from Mathematics/100% Silk/Jacktone veteran, Roche. Not only are the tracks ready to weave into that perfect spot in the night, but, they’re also earworms - brimming with lush grooves and melodies. The clean production and arrangement, featuring push / pull percussion, perfectly-placed pads, stabs and filters washing over propulsive basslines and percussion, locks in a warm yet hands-in-the-air vibe. The Roche remix of Swimma draws out the groove, expands on the percussion and adds some of that weird, hazy Bay fog. The tracks were recorded live in single takes with little post production processing, giving them a kinetic feel that can’t be reproduced.

The EP has been given early support from Octo Octa on Beats in Space and Shawn Reynaldo on First Floor Radio & RBMA.

Channel was produced with creative feedback and workshopping from both Cherushii and Nackt, whom were lost in the Oakland fire. The EP is released and dedicated to their memory.

Loren Steele is a San Francisco-based producer and multi-instrumentalist. As a bassist, DJ and a solo live PA artist, he has performed at Bay Area institutions, Haceteria, OK Hole, Psychic Friends, Run the Length of your Wildness, Space Gallery, Public Works, and Underground SF. He has releases on Wolf and Lamb Music, Run the Length of your Wildness, BOB recordings, and Microsound.org. Channel is his first vinyl 12"."

Price: €15,95 EU (incl. VAT) €13,40 non-EU

"Charles Bobuck is a big chicken. Chickens make for horrible song writers. Their songs are just a bunch of repetitive clucking. The thing they do really good is that they make a lot of them. Almost every morning you can hear them singing, having forced a big song lump out of their vagina, or wherever those things come from. Bobuck doesn’t have a vagina, but you can still hear him singing every morning over some song lump he left on the carpet, or on the stairs. Fortunately Klanggalerie picks them up so they don’t get stepped on. Well, some do get stepped on, but it is no matter. There are aways more. Eggs for Breakfast is a collection of 26 of Bobuck’s song eggs that did not get stepped on in 2016." Over the past few months, former Residents composer Charles Bobuck has released several Tiny Tunes through his website, newsletter and as free giveaways for holidays. We are now happy to present you the first collection of these songs on CD. Eggs For Breakfast collects 26 of these tunes, perfect little pop songs about important and unimportant things, with playful joy or rather melancholy. All songs composed and performed by Bobuck, and yes, all vocals, too."

"Cigarette smoke curled into the air which was filled with the sound of many typewriters, all clattering away, yet the sheets of paper remained blank. Everything was black and white and every shade of grey in between. The men and women wore pristine white shirts and black trousers. The ceilings were low and opressive. The cigarette smoke hung in the metal rafters. These was the offices of the Existential Police force. The sign, which curved in an arch above the exterior entrance, read “We Know you Did It” Officer Delane Trelawney looked down at her next interrogation sheet. She was tired. It was almost the end of her shift. The space which was labeled “suspects name“ read Elizaveta Ektimova. The space which was labeled :”reason for interview” read Dissident. Officer Trelawney sighed and looked across the desk at the figure sitting in the upright chair opposite her. The figure was that of a thin young woman with very black hair and very pale skin. Her eyes were set far apart and deep. They were almost black. Officer Delaney spoke: “Give me the answers....................Give me the answers” a long pause... “You know why you are here...............give me the answers” The young woman leaned forward slightly and when she spoke it was as if from very far away. Her voice sounded like a badly tuned radio, her words modulated on a carrier wave which came from another place, perhaps even another time,. “there are no answers”..... “we live in the dark”........ “we live in a dream”........ The words sent a chill through officer Delaney and a thought rose from deep within her ,like a bubble rising up from the depths of a dark lake. It rose and rose until it burst on the surface and for a moment Delane Trelawney saw above her a beautiful blue sky with pure white cotton wool clouds floating in it. Along the shore of the lake arose green hills and behind them mountains towered up into the vault of blue. Topped with snow they were pink in the afternoon sun. Delane Trelawney gasped at the beauty and just before she began to sink again into the inky depths she said “I remember “............ “I remember ”............. “tell Charlene”........ ” tell Charlene”......" Robin Storey, 2017 Brand new album by the legendary Rapoon. Robin Storey, co-founder of Zoviet France and a very prolific solo artist since his departure, is combining his love for krautrock with his love for French film. An hommage to the Nouveau Vague cinema with a soundtrack that for the first time incorporates real drums! Another radical change for Rapoon. Always evolving, always progressing."

Experimental Electronic, Singer/Songwriter, Avant-Folk, Breakbeats, IDM
Price: €15,95 EU (incl. VAT) €13,40 non-EU

"Klanggalerie are very happy to announce a new collaboration with Rapoon after a far too long 12 year break. Waiting By The River is the all-new album by Robin Storey that takes the project into previously uncharted territory. Founded in 1992 after Storey left Zoviet France, Rapoon soon became an outstanding ethno-dark ambient project that has gained a cult following all over the world. More than 50 albums have been released over those 25 years, some more beat driven, others more playful and with ambient sounds and ethnic influences. Rapoon has never stopped evolving - think of Cultural Forgeries, an album full of unplugged acoustic music. Or Downgliding, full of compositions on the piano. In 2016, Rapoon presents you an album full of songs. You will hear guitars, vocals, stories are being told. A very different approach to Rapoon and one you've never heard before. Needless to say, the trademark Rapoon sound is still there. But this time you get a little extra. Another milestone in the band's discography. Low stock."

"After the austerity of the 1950’s we entered the 1960’s with huge optimism and the belief that anything was possible. We had a new world opening out in front of us. A world of rapid technological advancement. A world of new foods. A world of new cars, new jobs, new possibilities. We were going to the moon. We were promised holidays on the moon. It was to be a world of plenty. You believe these things when you are five years old. The booming sixties came and went. We landed on the moon. The seventies saw a decline in economy and in hope. First Thatcher, then Blair, then Cameron went on to destroy everything that had been built for the people after the second world war. Now it was all for the privileged The moneyed. The few. An old lady sits by a billabong under a clear blue sky. She talks with her ancestors who wait by the river. As they have waited for millennia. She sings an ancient song. The water trembles."

His roots lie in the British blues scene, but he soon became friends with The Residents who also gave him the name Snakefinger based on a photograph of Lithman performing, in which his finger looks like a snake about to attack his violin. In 1972 Lithman returned to England and formed the pub rock band Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers. After the lack of success of the second album, he returned to the states and work on his first solo album began. Both "Chewing hides the Sound" and "Greener Postures" were co-written with The Residents. Since its creation in 1976, featuring Jean-Jacques Birgé, Bernard Vitet and Francis Gorgé, the group has decided to promote collective musical creation, co-signing their albums, which they consider as artworks in themselves, or their live shows which they try to renew every time they play. Un Drame borrowed their sources from rock (synthetizer player Birgé and guitarist Gorgé, both authors of the album, Défense de); jazz (trumpeter Vitet who founded the first free jazz band in France, together with François Tusques, as well as Michel Portal who played with many American and European jazzmen); classical modern music; as well as movies or world news; they were the first in France to give a new impetus to live music on silent films. Birgé and Gorgé also recorded a duo album that was mentioned on the infamous Nurse With Wound list, Défense De. On Rideau, you will hear their wild mix of styles, a very original, unclassifiable, inventive music, which drifts from jazz to electronic music and contemporary music. Remastered in 2016 and with a lot of bonus tracks, amongst them the track that appeared on United Dairies' compilation album "In Fractured Silence" for the first time in its full length!"

Track list: 1. M'enfin 2. Rideau! 3. La critique 4. Pas besoin d’espérer pour entreprendre ni de réussir pour persévérer 5. Tunnel sous la Manche 6. La peur du vide 7. Légitime défense 8. Le directeur paiera pour ses crimes."

Experimental Electronic, Dark Ambient, Misc Eastern Europe
Price: €15,95 EU (incl. VAT) €13,40 non-EU

"Finally, after 5 years, here is the brand new album by the best band from the Czech Republic, Tabor Radosti. Egregor has all the TR trademark sound that you love: heavy rhythms that get cut up and distorted by Industrial noise, ambient soundscapes which are broken up by bits of vocals. Occult Industrial music at its very best. If you need comparison, think of The Devil & The Universe. Tabor Radosti are more serious though and less showmanship. They've been around for 15 years now and are renowned for their fabulous live shows. The new album also presents three remixes by Noises Of Russia, Vladimir Hirsch and Schloss Tegal. Produced by Moimir Papalescu, the famous Czech musician, sound engineer and synth guru, who has collaborated with members of the US New Wave band Devo, with Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten or with an UK musician and producer John Fryer (Member of This Mortal Coil). Also still available on Klanggalerie is their cult debut album Joycamp."

Title:The Entomology Of Sound
Artist:The Darkening Scale
Format:CD
Label:Klanggalerie
Genre:Experimental Electronic
Price: €15,95 EU (incl. VAT) €13,40 non-EU

"The Darkening Scale is the solo project of David Janssen aka Ted The Loaf of Renaldo & The Loaf. A purely digital affair, DS started in 2006 when RATL was on hold. The Entomology of Sound was the first album and came out as digital file and a very limited CDr. David says about it: "Back in 2006, much to my surprise, I found myself making music again after a long gap. Starting at the bottom of a steep learning curve, The Entomology of Sound was the first result, followed by a couple of other collections which reworked some of the ideas of The Entomology of Sound. I made a few CDRs for friends, sold a few via MySpace and offered some as free downloads. As the Renaldo and the Loaf reissue series came to its conclusion, and The Digital Larynx appeared on From Vienna with Love, Klanggalerie suggested releasing some material by The Darkening Scale 'properly'. Given that much of the material was nearly 10 years old and that I now felt that, with hindsight, there were a lot of things that I would have done differently and some things I wouldn't have done at all. In preparing this CD I was in the fortunate position of being able to rework and edit a lot of the material and use related material from Six Things Recycled and Stone Deaf Mythology. The experience of producing the bonus discs for the RATL reissue series also helped, especially with composing new pieces 'on the fly', so to speak. NB: no musical instruments were harmed whilst making this recording." A must have for Renaldo & The Loaf fans."

Track list: 1. Continental Drift 2. Cops And Pooters 3. Also Sprach Siphonaptera 4. Thrinpatronik: 1st instar 5. Strange Figment 6. Slackening 7. Tiara Ruck Song 8. Thripatronik: 2nd instar 9. Title:Disfigured Night

Format:CD
Label:Klanggalerie
Genre:
1990's, Classical, Soundtrack, Spoken Word, No Wave, Dark Ambient
Price: €15,95 EU (incl. VAT) €13,40 non-EU

"Over the years, The Residents have been so prolific that it's easy to see that a year could have simply vanished and gone unnoticed. And one did - 1997! In the early to mid 90's, The Residents were quite active in the creation of CD-ROMs, releasing Freak Show, The Ginger Bread Man, and Bad Day on the Midway from 1992-95. So much time was devoted to writing and designing the CD-Roms that, other than some soundtrack music for the game and a short side project, Pollex Christi, no music was recorded in 1996. Having lost so much time on a dead concept, 1997 finally arrived, but the new year was not so happy. For the first time in decades, The Residents had absolutely nothing in the works. 1997 was born dead. And truthfully, the year never got much better, but the group did begin moving in some interesting new directions. Creatively, The Residents saw Pollex Christi as a successful experiment, consequently they decided to follow it up with another highly experimental, classically styled piece. Moving quickly, in the spring of 1997, the group began work on a new 15 min work, Disfigured Night. Soon afterards, inhabiting a position that normally would have been occupied by a string quartet, The Residents performed for a small, but wealthy crowd in San Jose. As the unsuspecting patrons entered the event, the group was seen perched 30 feet above the entrance to the cavernous lobby of software giant Adobe's world headquarters. Needless to say, The Residents hour long set was not quite what the rich nerds expected. Making sure no one missed it, the group performed the set, made up of a mix of prerecorded and live elements - some planned and some spontaneous - four times, and quickly left town. Soon another request came in, this time from the unlikely source of Marlboro cigarettes - in Germany. Searching for an event on which to focus their advertising at the Popkomm music trade show in Cologne, the tobacco giant suggested a short performance, 20-30 minutes in length, that could be video taped for television; it was to be performed 3 or 4 times with a changing audience. Aided by MTV producer and friend, John Payson, The Residents adapted a piece from the Adobe performance, transforming it into a 30 minute performance vehicle, Disfigured Night. The Residents performed Disfigured Night four times that evening; several months later, the piece was later broadcast on national television in Germany. First time ever on CD! Keywords: Charles Bobuck, Randy Rose."

"Between June 1999 and May 2000 Ralph America posted several Residents MP3s on their website. Shortly afterwards, these exclusive pieces were collected on a limited edition CD entitled Dot.Com. Klanggalerie are proud to present you an updated version of this album, remastered and with new artwork by Pore Know Graphics. In 2013, a new sub label of Ralph was started, Radio Thoreau, on the official Residents website. Radio Thoreau presented a collection of recent Residents tunes "fixed" by Charles Bobuck into a more radio friendly form: singles. All material was submitted to iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and Google Play for an undefined period. Five of these reworkings are collected here, including one which was never released to the public. "The tape was dubbed at home with a Marantz CP430 directly from a 4track master cassette played by a Yamaha MT 100 II. Dubbing was done in real time. The cassette is a C40, chrome quality.

Ben Roberts is a British expat living in Madrid. He has been fascinated by everything regarding magnetic tape since his youngest years. This resulted in building a huge archive of found tapes. As an artist Ben uses the tapes in installations and live shows.

As the title suggests, much of this work was conceived as ‘units’: segments of sound combined starkly in collage form; awkward or absurd combinations or, in contrast, subtly blended matches that seem quite natural. Nine pieces that, in turn, are units in themselves, having largely been created independently of one another during sporadic working periods over the two year period.

Sounds of different origins and ages are blended with (or hurled against) each other.

i. Found tapes recorded by strangers, and functioning or signifying in some bygone cultural context; surviving audio remnants of a time that doesn’t exist anymore.
ii. TV/Radio/music extracts: To introduce occasional fragments of externally-referenced meaning into the pieces.
iii. Mechanical or tape-sounds: Due to material ageing, breakdown or modification, the original functional identity of the sound is nearly or completely obscured.
The combinations produce meanings above and beyond anything the individual parts may have had. Narratives that put us in direct contact with historic events as they unfold in every day life.

The precise use and choice of fragments, the delicacy and awareness in attitude towards the use of found material and most important of all, the artistic approach add a touch of ‘sehnsucht’, an almost mystic glow to the sound.

Unit Audio ignites your imagination. It makes you wander over paths that almost got covered by the forgetfulness of our times."

"I had the idea years ago. The C60 The Last Day on Earth had to become the follow-up of The Four Corners of the Night. I asked four artists. Each artist got a different score. The score was either a short story or a kind of poem. I never got four satisfying contributions in return. Two pieces were in line with the concept. I thought that I could use those two compositions, some fragments from the others and create an audio-book. My ambition was obstructed by reality. I put the release on hold for a long time. Midori and Kris were incredibly patient.

I had to think again of his contribution when I listened to Kris’ release begin_if_(3). I liked his cinematographic approach very much. Desolation and optimism, a burning landscape, industrial wasteland on a blackened horizon, two people who probably didn’t know anything about their fate, all these elements were present. I listened to Midori’s work. I encountered the quality I needed. She was absent in her piece. The piano talked. The notes floated gently. There was a hint of happy sadness that defines life once youthful years start withdrawing in objects. There was silence in between those notes, like there can be silence, when a distant feeling of calm pushes emotional ties aside.

The two pieces made me think. Burn Midori’s piece to ashes, the remains would sound like Kris’ composition. Treat Midori’s piano work with x-ray and what you will see is Kris’ work. I found the similarity striking and decided to pick up the original concept and make it a C30.

A long process started. My first concern was the look of the tape. Once that problem was solved, partly by coincidence, the idea for the artwork came. I knew it had to be a plastic bottle. It was impossible to do the sixties pop-art thing I had in mind. Maybe I will use this concept once I start creating artworks that measure at least one square meter. I think, though, that Geert-Jan Hobijn’s work in progress -plastic souls- pushed me to the plastic bottles.

The Last Day on Earth, with works by Midori Hirano and Kris Limbach is a C30 of chrome quality. It was duplicated at home, in real time, using a Marantz CP430. The inlay is an A4 with the complete texts of both scores and the credits.

The Last Day on Earth is released in a small edition of 26 copies. I will make a new edition once the first one has sold out completely."

"In Spain, as well as elsewhere too, a self-publishing/zine virus is running rampant at the moment, releasing the creativity of many young artists. These artists are sick and tired of waiting in line to be published in established publications, and are self-organizing, self-publishing and establishing their own publications instead. This creative cauldron contains many tasty treats, by which we mean promising young comics artists. A whole bunch of them is presented in the newest 69th issue of Stripburger that starts with a ‘mute text’ penned by the seasoned veteran of the Spanish comics zine scene Olaf Ladousse. Additional information about the unbridled spreading and new mutations of the self-publishing virus can be found in the short text by Martin Lopez Lam who’s created the juicily colourful front cover of the magazine as well.
Equally colourful is the back cover, too, signed by our old Swiss friends M.S. Bastian and Isabelle L. But wait, there’s more! We have another Swiss in this issue, namely David Schilter, who’s otherwise been tied more closely to the Latvian comics magazine kuš! instead as its cofounder and coeditor for the past ten years. His interview explains the genesis and the development of the magazine and shows how they tackle their editorial and publishing work. The second interview features a discussion with Gašper Rus, one of the most prolific domestic comics artists and a long-time collaborator of our magazine.
Variety marks the rest of the content of the magazine as well, since comics are a medium with innovative approaches and of a broad spectrum, and this latest issue of Stripburger clearly testifies to this.

Let yourselves become infected!"
