Title:Indonesian Space Science Society
Artist:Venzha Christ
Format:LP
Label:Artkillart
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Sound Art, Misc Asia & Middle East
Price: €20,00 EU (incl. VAT) €16,81 non-EU

Limited edition of 300 copies. Includes poster and insert.

"Working with artists, scientists, astronomers and engineers in Indonesia, Venzha Christ has established Indonesia Space Science Society as a framework for the exploration of space from a different perspective. Whilst lacking the means that large space agencies such as NASA have, the Indonesia Space Science Society provides us with a compelling encounter with space nonetheless.
The record presents radio waves from space, sent and collected through self-made radio antennas gathering precise data from astronomical objects in space. The transmitted signals received from the planets and stars are then decoded into audible sounds.
Includes a text from Ewen Chardronnet (Association of Autonomous Astronauts / Aliens in Green / Laboratory Planet)."

Title:Cholo
Artist:El Polen
Format:LP
Label:Buh Records
Genre:
1970's, Soundtrack, Folk, Acoustic, Traditional Music, Singer/Songwriter, Misc Central & South America
Price: €23,90 EU (incl. VAT) €20,08 non-EU

"Buh Records is pleased to present for the first time in vinyl format, the re editions of the two first and fundamental albums by El Polen, the legendary Peruvian band formed by late 1960s by brothers Juan Luis and Raul Pereira. Two records highly sought by collectors round the world due to the majesty of a sound where you find Andean music, folk and psychedelia.

“Cholo” (1972) and “Out of the City (Fuera de la Ciudad)” (1973) are two landmarks in Peruvian music, as they are two works that start a path for fusion between rock and native music in Peru and Latin America.

At the beginning of the 1970s, rock in Peru began a new period. Beat and surf sounds which had identified a first generation of bands were left behind. “Matinales”, famous Sunday morning concerts were also left behind. The explosion of the hippy movement and psychedelia had transformed youth who began exploring new states of consciousness, new sounds and ways of life.

In those times, another thing was transforming Peru. In 1968 a nationalist government was established by Juan Velasco Alvarado; marking the end of an oligarchic state, which had ruled the country. Migration for the country to the city had intensified. Andean singers and musical groups began to fill coliseums located in the outskirts of the city, a new migrant population was their audience. The first
recordings of Andean music, promoted by Jose Maria Arguedas by the late 1940s acquired commercial leadership and they massified and expanded the Andean sound. Folklore then became the most solid musical industry Peru had ever had.

El Polen began to pollinate in 1969, when Juan Luis and Raul Pereira began their own personal transformations. Sensitive since very young to the sounds of rock as well as Peruvian waltzes and huaynos and classical music that they listened at home, they molded an eclecticism which became a fusion rock band, they took rock to the folklore turf. El Polen thus invented a legitimate new sound.

But musical search was also the demonstration of a new philosophy. The members of El Polen lived in community, they first moved to Cusco where they learned and deepened their knowledge of Andean instruments and musical traditions and then, in Santa Eulalia in the mountains of Lima, in a spiritual search far away from the
city. The gorgeousness of their music confirms the creative maturity they reached eliminating boundaries between rock and huayno. Acoustic guitars, quenas, cello, mandolins, percussions, these were the instruments used by the group to which they added a modern vision of production within the studio.

El Polen has been one of the most genuine forefront manifestations of rock made in Peru. Their innovations founded a new musical style, which many groups in Peru follow to present days. The encounter of Andean popular music tradition and rock that they created is one of the most creative moments of Peruvian history in the XX century.

The present edition in vinyl format has been produced from the master tapes with the authorization and supervision of the band itself. This is the starting point for a series of releases of a new collection of our label dedicated to El Polen."

Title:Primitivo
Artist:Miguel Flores
Format:LP
Label:Buh Records
Genre:
1980's, Avant Garde, Contemporary Composition, Electro-Acoustic, Analog Synth, Psychedelic Rock, Folk, Jazz, Classical, Misc Central & South America
Price: €22,90 EU (incl. VAT) €19,24 non-EU

"Miguel Flores is, alongside musicians such as Arturo Ruiz Del Pozo, Luis David Aguilar, or Manongo Mujica, one of the most important representatives of that period that spans from mid-70s to mid-80s, when experimenting musically in Peru united modern composing techniques of avant-garde music and the search of the sounds of mother land. A drummer turned into a multi instrument player, who began by playing rock from mid '60s on, with groups such as The Loop's, Thee Image, and most pointedly with PAX, iconic hard rock band of the '70s, Miguel Flores tackled Peruvian folk music by 1974 with his group Ave Acustica, which included non-conventional musical techniques into their performances. Those were times when folk music was widely promoted, as a consequence of the policies of Juan Velasco Alvarado's nationalistic policies. The appearance of the Talleres de la Canción Popular, headed by Celso Garrido Lecca, in 1974, was decisive to brood a new generation of folk and new song groups. In this environment, and after leaving PAX, Miguel Flores goes deep into his interests in folk and sound experiments as well as free jazz, his attempts to fuse what was considered could not be fused, being rejected by all sides equally. Upon his return to Lima, after an intense tour to Japan in 1980, Miguel Flores was commissioned by choreographer Luciana Proaño to write the score for her new contemporary performance Mitos Y Mujeres. Miguel Flores called Corina Bartra, Arturo De La Cruz, Manuel Miranda, and Aberlardo Oquendo to play the music which brought together folklore and psychedelia, free jazz, electronics, tribal music and ashaninka chants. A hypnotic sound stretches a bridge between ancient and avant-garde, the spirit of psychedelic rock, free jazz and pure sound experimentation. The studio recording of what was the score for Mitos Y Mujeres was kept away for more than 30 years. Now finally has its first edition on LP. This LP is part of Buh Records' Sounds Essentials Collection, curated by Luis Alvarado."

Title:Composiciones Nativas

Genre:
1980's, Avant Garde, Contemporary Composition, Experimental Electronic, Musique Concrète, Noise, Misc Central & South America
Price: €22,90 EU (incl. VAT) €19,24 non-EU

"By the end of the 1970s, a new generation of musicians who brought together ancestral and forefront, became visible in Lima as they searched for native sounds and the new tools of technology. Amongst them, we find Arturo Ruiz Del Pozo, composer who studied with Edgar Valcárcel. After studying at the National Conservatory in Lima he traveled to London in 1976 to register himself at the Royal College of Music where he took a master's degree in electronic composition. Ruiz Del Pozo had left Lima with a bag full of Peruvian native instruments with the idea of utilizing them in his future compositions. In London he was taught by Lawrence Casserly, one the prominent figures of Britain's electro acoustic composition; a musician who was fascinated by the interaction of instruments and electronic media way back from the times of his fundamental audiovisual experimentation group Hydra. Ruiz del Pozo utilized a series of concrete music resources learnt from Casserly. Based on sounds that came from native instruments and diverse manipulations to which these sounds were subject of, he obtained textures and sonorities, which, at the same time they invoked rituals, they opened a new field of experimentation; a collage of sounds of Andean reminiscence, echoes and abstractions, which will entrance you an unprecedented sound universe. These recordings were named Native Compositions (Composiciones Nativas) and they were released in a cassette tape format in 1984 by the author himself. More than 30 years later Buh Records rescued these recordings to inaugurate its Essential Sounds Collection, dedicated to publishing strange and fascinating artifacts of Peruvian experimental music of this period, in a CD edition (2015), which was quickly sold out. Now the label presents its first release on vinyl."

Title:I Enjoy The World

Format:Tape
Label:Buh Records
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Breakbeats, World, Modern Psych, Ambient, Dark Ambient, Computer Music, DIY
Price: €8,50 EU (incl. VAT) €7,14 non-EU

"“I Enjoy the World” is the result of an experiment I did during 6 months, in order to modify my relationship with mysticism, to approach it not from the language of official religions, ancestralisms or new age, but from everyday life experiences, available to anyone.

The experiment consisted of different techniques: sexual repression/excess, cybernetic disconnection/hyperconnection, fasting/psychoactive hyperstimulation, as ways of creating a personal mysticism. This experiment was born out of the need to exit the virtual world that seems to be devouring reality. An exit to the dynamics imposed by social media and new technologies, dynamics which occupy more and more the realm of our dreams, altered states, emotions and illusions.

“I Enjoy the World” is a music piece created in different mind/body states, induced during 6 months, and executed with instruments that include software and hardware made by myself during that period.
The piece is meant to be listened non-stop in its entirety (40 minutes), in a deep listening state, and will be performed live as a sonic meditation. (Efraín Rozas)

Efraín Rozas: New York based Peruvian musician/researcher, specialized in the combination of new technologies and Latin American genres. Efraín holds a PHD in Composition and Ethnomusicology from NYU, where he also worked as a teacher. His work has been featured in CNN, the BBC, The Washington Post, The Daily News and NPR Soundcheck, and presented at the Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum, Lincoln Center and at Central Park Summerstage Fania Records 50th Anniversary in New York where he played with his experimental salsa band La Mecánica Popular.
In 2007 he published the book “Fusión: a Soundtrack for Peru”, and released several records internationally via Names You Can Trust, The Ethnomusicology Institute of Peru and the Embassy of Spain."

Title:Ariha Brass Quartet
Artist:Ariha Brass Quartet
Format:LP
Label:Discrepant
Genre:
Improvisation, Acoustic, Misc Berlin
Price: €14,50 EU (incl. VAT) €12,18 non-EU

Electronic sounding acoustic only live experimentations by Axel Dörner, Franz Hautzinger & Mazen Kerbaj on trumpet, Carl Ludwig Hübsch on tuba.

"Ariha is a combination of 3 of the most innovating figures of modern day trumpet playing with tuba virtuoso Carl Ludwig Hubsch.

The practitioners here, three trumpeters, Axel Dörner, Franz Hautzinger, Franz Hautzinger, and Carl Ludwig Hübsch hoisting a tuba, practice a unique approach to their instruments. All four musicians set aside a traditional approach to playing, substituting breathe for notes, abandoning a mouthpiece, and applying amplification to microscopic sounds.

The quartet recorded this session in Beirut 2013, after a week's residency and performances. The four like-mind players open the disc with "Mar Mikhael in The Afternoon," the longest improvisation at 16-plus minutes. The fluttering of notes is accompanied by the snorting of unseen wild beasts and the coyote howls of brass. Their language, developed in the past 20 years or so, is a direct descendant from the European (as opposed to the American) systems and improvisers such as Derek Bailey, Eddie Prevost's AMM, and Paul Rutherford.

Stripped of the conventions of noted music, the growls and micro-notes would not be out of place in sci-fi cinema as the backdrop to the silence of an orbiting space station. The squiggles and on/off switches of sounds inhabit the ghosts in the machines of the imagination, but also the rumble and hum of the earth's inner core. "Hamra Drinks" buzzes with the low (really low) bass reverberation and the looping notes of trumpet that take on an organic biologic shape. Each piece conjures a response be it a visual, an emotional, a fragrance, a flavor, or something tactile. Ahira Brass Quartet opens the listening experience to all five senses." "Bosaina is a Syrian/Egyptian singer, songwriter & producer known for her work in the Kairo Is Koming Collective as well as her involvement in music-space-turned-club-night VENT.

Her autobiographical work takes on a magical insular quality through field recordings and sentimentally driven compositions that unfold in stolen time. On both EPs presented here, her love affair with cinema, interrupted by decaying urban life (New York April-July 2013) and literature (Two Names Upon The Shore) serve as the focal points for her intimate productions; fragmented and wistful soundscapes that combine her affection for the piano with ambient textures from seashore to life underground.

Artist:O Morto
Format:LP
Label:Discrepant
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Ambient, Field Recordings
Price: €14,50 EU (incl. VAT) €12,18 non-EU

"Translucent green vinyl edition of the 2016 tape. Re-mastered by Rashad Becker.

An immersive electronic tryptic piece dedicated to the Ba'Aka people and its spirits.

Albeit his music is now closer to a soundscape composition approach, O Morto (aka Mestre André) actually started as a free improv / noise project in 2012. However, after releasing his debut “Memento Mori”, O Morto slowly began to drift away from the harshest soundscapes to seek for a new direction. He found it under the form of the polyphonic music played by Ba’Aka (a pygmy tribe that still lives in the Republic of Congo), and in a conceptualised image of Jengi - a forest spirit that feeds from the flesh of a sacrifice. Having this exotic array of influences in mind, O Morto collected samples, field-recordings and electronic sounds that would eventually appear in the dense (and sometimes enigmatic) triptych piece “The forest, the people and the spirits”.

Originally composed for 8 digital tracks in the sonic research studio of SFU Burnaby (Canada), the record explores the possibilities of sound manipulation as a way to create rich, vivid and cinematic soundscapes. A noise maker by nature, André also plays in the excellent Älforjs and produces some of the most addictive beats as Notwan." António M. Silva

Title:Tele-N-Tech-Da
Artist:Sugai Ken
Format:LP
Label:Discrepant
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Sound Collage, Glitch, Musique Concrète, Misc Japan
Price: €13,90 EU (incl. VAT) €11,68 non-EU

"Japanese artist Sugai Ken presents a kaleidoscopic radio play inspired by the traditional Japanese art of Mingei.

In Sugai Ken’s own words:
''In recent years I have been researching old Japanese culture and customs in order to deepen my musical production. I found that, countless times, we still don’t see through it as a whole. I am still excited to find that there are many untouched roots yet to be discovered which only motivates me to pursuit my research further.
As I dig deeper, I'm always struck with the general idea that “everything has its own ground”, otherwise known as rigid ideas and concepts.
Indeed, it is important to have a clear ground to explore things from. Especially as our times are overloaded with too much information, things which are spoon fed to us will always be short lived, so for me it becomes a case of those rigid ideas becoming less flexible.
One of the many benefits of computer music is being able to separate it from history/traditions and allowing you to simply enjoy mixing sounds and concepts, regardless of its original meaning. By being free from 'having to' make sense we can make creation much more enjoyable.

When I made this album I put my priority in freedom, rather than being stuck with those rigid ideas and concepts. This way I could really enjoy and get deep into the 'mixology' of it all.
Like my other works, Japanese is always a fundamental motif and I envision it like an imaginary radio drama by adding spontaneous dialogs throughout.
I will be happy if listeners pay attention to these (and other) details and enjoy listening to my work.'' Sugai Ken, 2018

Experimental Electronic, Industrial, Breakbeats
Price: €13,90 EU (incl. VAT) €11,68 non-EU

"South Californian dons of occult electronics, German Army return to discrepant with their first solo vinyl outing LP for the label after an inaugural tape back in 2015 and a split collaboration with Old Komm in 2016.

Taking the events described in the 1982 book of the same title, the CIA coup in Guatemala in 1954, the duo eloquently translates this textbook case of bullying relationship between the United States and the Third World. Using some of U.S. government documents and interviews with former CIA agents they go deep in the Guatemala jungle through their trademark use of guitars and electronics drenched in echo and reverb of times past.
Another mysterious entry from the shady San Bernadino duo, showing their interest and research in poorly documented history of the 21st Century.
With specially commissioned artwork by Belgium artist Alexandre Vanleemput.

Title:Stridulations
Artist:Pali Meursault
Format:LP
Label:Discrepant
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Improvisation, Field Recordings, Misc France
Price: €14,50 EU (incl. VAT) €12,18 non-EU

"Field recordings and electromagnetic improvisations by French artist Pali Meursault.

Pali Meursault is a sound artist, composer and sound designer. His electroacoustic and sound art research takes different shapes: compositions for records, radio works, installations or performances. Environmental sound recording is central in his work, which takes from Musique Concrète and the sonic exploration of soundscapes.

For stridulations, Meursault confronts recorded and performed sounds, composition and improvisation: field- recordings of animal communication (insects, birds and bats recorded in France, Japan and South America over almost ten years) mix and dialog with the ‘sonification’ of fluorescents tubes.

Both the environmental sound matter composition and the electromagnetic instrument have evolved with performances between 2014 and 2017. Little by little, new recordings were collected and new electrical and electronic supplies were added to the setup. The record is altogether the outcome of that process and a different take on the project, leaving the synesthetics of the flickering lights but embracing the deepness of ‘blind’ listening.

For Pali Meursault, the long research for stridulations has been a practice for deconstructing binary oppositions between nature and machine, bio- and anthropo-phony, and instead to explore the strange sonic affinities that exist between some animal voices and technological phenomena. The performances were a way of switching from a contemplative and ideologic relation to the soundscape to a praxis of noise, using animals and electromagnetic sounds as sonic qualities, possibilities, and intensities."

Pop, No Wave, Post-Punk, Underground Art, DIY, Misc France
Price: €15,50 EU (incl. VAT) €13,03 non-EU

"Debut LP from the excellent French quartet Rose Mercie. Landing somewhere between The Shangri-Las, Raincoats, Rosa Yemen, Sleater-Kinney, Josephine Foster or Marianne Faithfull, the sound of Rose Mercie subtly integrates many influences. Active since 2013, Rose Mercie is finally releasing its first album now in 2018. The chemistry between these four musicians (Charlène, Inès, Louann, and Michèle) is palpable and propels each song in a swarm of sometimes negative imagination and sometimes sweet bitterness. At times melancholic and moving, percussive but also bestowed with magnificent vocal harmonies, this album is to be savored in its rawness. Indeed for me, the voices are the centerpiece of this brilliant first record. Hand stamped, painted and numbered copies, limited edition of 500 copies. Co-released with SDZ Records (FR) and Monofonus Press (US)."

"So many artists that use the vibrant post-punk scene in the U.K. and U.S. as their foundational inspiration do the expected, folding in contemporary influences and techniques as needed. What thrills me so much about the work of French quartet Rose Mercie is that there’s little to differentiate their work from vintage recordings by the Pop Group, Ut or The Raincoats. They’ve captured the essence of that late ‘70s/early ‘80s time so succinctly that I’m still not totally convinced that it isn’t a lost recording from the era." Robert Ham, Paste Magazine

On the cover a radiographic image shows ovaries, dressed up by variations of masks made of lacework, on side B of the vinyl a cave is engraved and inhabited by spider webs and moths; all those elements compose a game echoing the sound and the words of "Ovaries"."

Price: €18,90 EU (incl. VAT) €15,88 non-EU

"Lullabies For Insomniacs presents ‘For Leena’, a collection of unreleased pieces composed between 1991 & 1998 by Dino J.A. Deane for the choreography of Colleen Mulvihill.

Beginning his professional career at the age of nineteen, as a musical arranger and multi-instrumentalist (trombone, flutes, keyboards, percussion), Dino J. A. Deane worked in funk bands around Los Angeles before moving to San Francisco in the mid 1970’s, where he became involved, as an improvising artist, in the diverse communities of dramatic theater, modern dance, free jazz and punk rock.

In the early 1980's Mr. Deane pioneered the use of live-electronics, live-looping and live-sampling in three distinct genres that heavily informed his later compositions: As a member of art-punk band Indoor Life, touring and recording with fourth world pioneer Jon Hassell and as an electro-acoustic percussionist in the Conduction orchestras of Butch Morris.

During this period Mr. Deane also worked as a sound designer for theater, with directors Sam Shepard, Julie Hebert and Christoph Marthaler. He maintained a long-term relationship in the world of modern dance with former Olympic gymnast and choreographer Colleen Mulvihill, creating and performing numerous dance and music works for her. The couple met in San Francisco in 1979 through his good friend Bruce Ackley, whom was commissioned to compose a score for one of her solo pieces. Colleen, was a member of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and was planning to move to New York City to set out on her own as a dancer and choreographer. Their paths crossed again in 1980 when Dino moved to NYC with Indoor Life, during this time they began a long term relationship both on and off the stage, which continues to this day.

“Mr. Deane adjusted his electronics with the glee of a villain in a science fiction epic and raised his trombone as if it were a weapon. He could have been a sorcerer and Ms. Mulvihill could have been someone lost in a realm of black magic.” The New York Times"

"The five songs on this tape are the only recorded output of this now-defunct Chicago band which included members of Pelican, Sweet Cobra, Planes Mistaken for Stars, and Milemarker. The band went on hiatus when bassist/co-vocalist Al Burian, also of Burn Collector zine fame, moved to Germany. If you imagine blending the music of the "ex-members" bands, you might have an idea of what this sounds like. Maybe add some Coliseum or Motorhead, too. Driving, rocking, soaked with attitude, mastered LOUD by Will Killingsworth to be played that way. Includes digital download coupon."

"Those not familiar with Jones’ style, will listen slack-jawed at the shear anticipatory nature of his sound collage. Initially released by Staalplaat in 1999 (the same year of his passing away) as part of the ‘Box Of Silk And Dogs’ comes out again as a double LP. He was a cult artist, politically motivated for the arab-palestinian cause and a seminal experimenter of the ethnical samples’ use with minimal and electronic rhythms. The atmospheres retain intact the original charm made out of full and gloomy, but pulsating in the provoked emotions, very different from the exotic and ornamental processing of certain world music. Drum machines, old synths, percussion, all combined in a traditional way, without any computer help. Sounds anyway already permeated with what will have come, drawing on different genres but always supporting a specific poetic. “Peace is a distant dream” Bryn Jones said, in one of his latest interviews. He died for a rare blood disease, and on both sizes things seem to unfortunately still be the same.
Ingaza is thematically and stylistically all over the place, sporting atmospheric instrumental loops one moment and jarring, heavily barbed and distorted beats the next. Differences between tracks, not unlike changing channels on TV or switching between net browsers, predominate, imagery conjuring Middle Eastern travel and tourism on one screen plays against grisly proxy war footage on the next. The only threads linking these tracks were made during Jones' grittier production-cum-dub days during the last years of his life.
