Format:LP
Label:Analogical Force
Genre:
Compilation, Experimental Electronic, Breakbeats, IDM, Electro, Drum & Bass
Price: €13,00 EU (incl. VAT) €10,92 non-EU

"Next up! Second chapter in the AF Voiceless series. The label run by Pervert keeps on broadening its own catalogue by adding artists committed to the electronic cause. This EP is a 5-track new voyage through analogue-crafted soundscapes, acid-injected breaks, thudding bass lines, warm and intricate melodies… the sheerest voice for the voiceless. AF005Y introduces new members to the family as Houston-based Daed (Ian Lambert), who displays his ability to create a perfect acid-glitched blast called ‘Pulse Lunar’. Thus, ‘Smiley moon’ is above all a glimpse into the analogue world of the well-known Rolando Simmons, proving himself he's one of the brightest electronic artists of the moment. Sheffield based Dave Forrester (TechDiff) twists the modular in ‘Jamuary’ with a killer Aphexian/Jenkinson temper. Longing raving days are depicted in ‘Quest’ with an evocative electro halo by the hand of the Irish producer Cignol. Last but not least, ’Smoke’, a junglist, acid, and braindance orgy signed by Gareth Clarke, known for his previous works on Canada’s Sublight Records (Venetian Snares, Bill Laswell) and LoveLove Records. Play it loud! Limited and handnumbered as usual."

"Time to come out of the old dusty box for an album by Muslimgauze named 'Wish of the Flayed' that has for a long time remained under wraps. Bryn Jones himself gave this album on cassette tape to Steven Wilson (Bass Communion) during their first meeting on the 3rd of june 1996; the album having been recorded the day before. (One day for making a whole album is not so surprising for Muslimgauze). The master DAT had, seemingly, not been sent to any label, so this recording is the only proof of the existence of the album."

Black vinyl edition. Produced and recorded by James Leyland 'The Caretaker' Kirby in 2006, mixed by Miles Demdike in 2017. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. One-Sided LP, Adults Only.

"The Brabant Shrobbelèr is a searing selection of classic and unreleased New Beat productions by James Leyland Kirby aka The Caretaker, aka V/Vm. It was selected and sequenced by Jerk van den Boschalottt and mixed and chopped to mucky perfection by Miles ov Demdike Stare, marking up a personally important 5th instalment in our 12 x 12 series, while also providing a fitting headstone to one of Kirby’s most crucial and little known projects.

New Beat has long become the black sheep of Manchester’s dance music canon, wilfully unacknowledged by successive generations of DJs who continue to suckle at the entrails of the Haçienda, when in fact New Beat was a crucial part of the Manc Dance make-up, most often mixed up with Chicago, Detroit and New York house, and whatever UK bleeps and boops were bubbling thru at that time.

Thanks to the influence and legendary DJ sets of V/Vm card holder, Acid Alan - whose New Beat collection spilled over the racks at a now defunct NQ record shop - its memory and place in Manchester’s rave folklore has been preserved by only a select few souls who really.cannot.be.fxcking.chuffed. with the constantly regurgitated putative history of our city’s club and warehouse culture.

Now, 30 years since New Beat was syncretised and sonified by the weekending loons of Flanders from the the best/worst bits of synth-pop, EBM, house and electro - arguably giving birth to the rave techno paradigm we know and love in the process - V/Vm’s dark, sexy, and unforgiving dedications take on a new afterlife, resculpted into the oft-maligned but temporally appropriate format of a MegaMix, as was found on dozens of original New Beat and Acid House compilations and 12”s.

Driving from Be-Dash’s over-the-limit jackoff, Must Do to the curdled acid gargle of Euro Hit via pure smuts in I Wanna Fxck Miss Nicky Trax, also taking in ‘Animal’ Andy McGregor’s Fxck My Pussy and Hear Me Coming, and previously unknown gold such as Russell Grant and Bajs Grotta, this is the sort of record that deserves its own plinth in the Arndale, preferably somewhere in front of the sweaty gammons and chicken elbows at Gabbott’s farm shop.

Free download of Mike Pickmynose and John Rubb spoojing lyrical about when they used to tonk New Beat all night in ’88 is not included. File between your legs."

"Feeling numb from all the electronic dancemusic coming out?, moaning about how its become a bit samey, or are you just tired of your shitster friends saying its not like in the 90's anymore. This record will shut everyone in the room up. A1 is a deeply psychotic acid death march into confusion, so minimal and primitive (kick, snare, acidsquelch) it will challenge every beard and armpit and might even hypnotize the dj to the point he cannot mix in the next one. A2 is a straight up Commodore 64 SID track with mongoloid data elephants tooting over a wobbly and tarded electroish beat. B1 is a dystopic dreamy rave stomper, starting out kinda datacuddly but gets more and more serious, with choirs of fable mooers taking you into that virtual bad trip you need. b2 continues as expected with more c64 SID madness, so snary I cant even determine if its in 115 or 230bpm. But it leaves you with the feeling your ears and mind just been wrestled, smacked and poked at, and thats the point. This is no record for the safing chickenshit DJ." DJ Joakim Cosmo, Sweden.

"Berlin based producer and DJ Hector Oaks' new EP under his quite new moniker Cadency.

His previous "Digitally Controlled Emotionless Systems" or the limited 10“ produced for the Berliner Herrensauna party, "Avoid your Nation", were solid enough blocks to draw his musical speech. Héctor Oaks is the man standing behind the Cadency project and with Gazing in a Social Hub we might be in front of the heaviest, stubbornest and more serious attempt of his discography under that alias.

Recorded in Kreuzberg, Berlin, in the winter of 2015/2016, this 4 highly tensed tunes, rhythmically conducted by distorted classic drum machines, switch in between frames of mind. From hard hitting melancholic Electro, acidly driven, to the edgy emotional character of "Ignorance is Strength". This EP will stay in your record bag.

45rpm.

"After an EP on Creme Organization off-shoot Jericho One as DJ Plant Texture, Dona Basile now assumes his Dona alias for a new EP on the main label. Entitled The V.G.P Sessions, it features four new cuts from the Italian. Up first is a live cut version of 'Energia', a bristling electro track with globular bass and coarse hits. Turbulent but full of synth based serenity, it is a fine start. 'Cigarettes' is rugged and broken, with glossy IDM synths and corrugated drums all loosely arranged into something prickly and unsettling. 'The Deads At Twelve' then gets even more fucked up, with rusty synths and blown out drums making for a dystopian house groove that will likely soundtrack the apocalypse. Last but not least, 'Nr. 13' mixes up Detroit synths, wild acid, heavenly chords and chopped up, buried deep vocal samples into something that will fire every synapse in your body. This is outlier stuff from Dona that sounds like little else."

Title:Levitation Praxis Pt. 4
Artist:Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe
Format:LP

Experimental Electronic, Acoustic, Electro-Acoustic, Sound Art, Ambient, Drone
Price: €19,90 EU (incl. VAT) €16,72 non-EU

"Black Vinyl Edition of 500 copies. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe’s incredible recordings with Harry Bertoia’s sound sculptures are here documented on a beautiful new edition for Demdike Stare’s DDS imprint, coinciding with his appearance on the cover of this months issue of The Wire magazine.

Lowe is something of a polymath; having started out as part of Math Rock outfit 90 Day Men and doom metal trio Om, he progressed to forge his own solo work (often under the Lichens moniker), as well as a slew of collaborations including work with Johann Johannsson on scoring both Arrival and Sicario, an acclaimed album with Ariel Kalma for RVNG Intl’s FRKWYS series, plus involvement in site specific video art and sound installations. His most recent work has seen him release diverse music for Type, Latency, More Than Human and, of course DDS - who have here presented what might just be the most beautiful Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe artefact thus far.

In 2016 Lowe was commissioned by New York’s museum of Arts to contribute to a Harry Bertoia exhibition, which he undertook alongside video director Johann Rashid. He was asked to create sound recordings with Sonambient sculptures; metal rods and gongs that produce highly distinct, resonant sounds when struck, brushed or touched. Beginning in 1968, Bertoia set up an eighteenth-century stone barn on his property in Barto, Pennsylvania, to house these sculptures and from which he would go on to record works for his highly collectable Sonambient label, recently documented on Important Records' breathtaking box set and reissue series. Lowe was given full access to the barn, beautifully filmed footage of which can be found online.

Lowe’s work with these sculptures is unlike anything you might have heard from the original Bertoia recordings. Instead of serendipitous improvisation, Lowe weaves his way through the sculptures on a path that was mapped out in advance, imbuing them with a more “composed” and arranged feel.

As he explains to The Wire “The technique I developed in engaging with those sculptures was different than the ways i’d seen other people do it. It was sublime to be in that space with the air touching the sculptures and moving them, you had these sort of apparitions that were moving around with you”. As well as the familiar Sonambient sound palette, he subtly manipulates and feeds in vocal layers that take proceedings into ever more ethereal and haunting dimensions.

It’s a beautiful, inspirational recording from an artist that’s impossible to pin down. "i don't give a fuck. i do what i do, and that’s the end of it”."

"New edition of this absolute classic in a new sleeve. This post-revolution Iranian album from 1985 is so ahead of its time, so completely off on its own sonically and stylistically - that you'd be forgiven for thinking it were a hoax. In reality it's one of the most sought-after and exceptional records from the Smithsonian Folkways catalogue, here brought back to life in this facsimile edition put together by the Dead Cert imprint. Until now, it's been the preserve of a small handful of collectors who rightly hold it in huge regard and close to their chests. A syncretic traversal of Iranian folk music and modular synth strafing radio-phonic, musique concrète, neo-tanktrik and sound design disciplines, it simply sounds quite unlike anything out there (if you know better, please, please share!) and has had us, and everyone who's heard it, utterly enraptured. OK, there may be some precedents in the work of electronic music pioneer Ilhan Mimaroglu, and it has undoubtedly directly or indirectly inspired music that has come since (Keith Fullerton Whitman's 'Variations For Oud & Synthesizer', for instance), but we're sure you'll agree that the elements have rarely gelled so fluidly, phantastically psychedelic as this, before or since. It's possible to trace that combination of traditional and contemporary styles, mixed with a liberating sense of freedom and abstract expression, to the composer's history; from early enrolment in Shah-sponsored music schools and conservatories he was awarded scholarship for further studies in Holland, and when the revolution arrived in Iran he would permanently leave for the world famous Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center in the late '70s, all priming Dariush's tastes and skills for these recordings made during the mid '80s, late at night in the university studios with the permission of Professor Ussachevsky. It's testament to its enduring magic that listening back now for the umpteenth time we're still bewildered and vividly transported as we were the first time, lost to its roil of tangled timbres and etheric dynamism, keeling to the metallic lushness of the strings and rendered mindblown at the synchronised sweeps of modular synth and simulated environs. It's a genuine wonder of the electronic music world, and an utterly essential listen, by anyones standards."

Title:Science & Technology
Artist:Raskovich
Format:LP
Label:Dead-Cert
Genre:
1970's, Contemporary Composition, Experimental Electronic, Ambient, Dark Ambient, Drone, Noise, Misc Italy
Price: €18,50 EU (incl. VAT) €15,55 non-EU

"Known to a wider audience by his real name Giuliano Sorgini (under which he released groundbreaking records such as The Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue and Zoo Folle) the semi-fictional composer Raskovich is best known to discerning record collectors for the undefinable and inimitable studio trickery found on off-kilter sound design records for commercially unavailable Italian library labels, as well as being the glue between Giulia (Kema) De Mutiis and Alessandro (Braen) Alessandroni in the enigmatic The Pawnshop mystery supergroup. Under the Raskovich alias Sorgini was able to produce some of his most challenging work in a well equipped studio environment in both a solo and small group capacity; benefitting the introduction of electronic equipment and a climate of like-minded composers such as Lamartine, Daniella Casa, A. R. Luciani and a young Fabio Frizzi, whose collective work indicated a new wave in italian production music and a new home for uninhibited avant-garde composition (which simultaneously followed the same creative trajectory as the countries alternative cinema and art industries). Alongside rare records such as the Informale series for Panda records and the various collaborations with Alessandroni, such as Incriminazione, Drammatico and Inchiesta Giudiziaria (Abnormal Sensations), Science & Technology finds Raskovich at his most brazen and esoteric, committing minimalist tape experiments and mechanical free noise to monaural vinyl under the request of Romano Di Bari’s open-minded Flipper network of labels.

Originally released in 1972 as an intended two part conceptual series called Scienza e Technologia for the Flirt imprint (sharing catalogue numbers with the lesser-known Italian Emma De Angelis and Belgian Brainticket founder Joel Vandroogenbroeck) the album never benefitted a sequel and as testament to its obscurity still evades collectors and online discographies which have come to light with the recent heightened interest in this lesser-spotted characters sonic dossier. As a welcome addition to the collections of fans of European “contemporary” composition, musique concrète, electro-acoustic and Italian soundtrack music this release is quite unlike the many projects that have recently flooded the reissue market and stands up as one of the truly unobtainable and wholly original records to come from this important era of European studio music by a composer who’s reputation is slowly approaching monarchial status."

Label:Dement3d Records
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Techno, Misc France
Price: €10,00 EU (incl. VAT) €8,40 non-EU

Side A: 45rpm / Side B: 33rpm

"Two years after his latest solo appearance on DEMENT3D, Francois X, also co-founder of the label, reveals his new EP Unicorn Paranoia. A record that sounds slightly more intimate indeed, after a period marked by close collaborations, especially with Opuswerk (Hiss:1292) and Antigone (We Move As One). The active listener will surely notice a shift in François’s musical approach, the tribal shamanism – once his prevailing credo – has ceded the lead to a somewhat subtler blend of influences. The hypnotic affinity, inevitably one of the prepon- derant aspect in Francois’s previous material has combined with his strong house and industrial influences. Inspired by film directors he admires, François X immerses the listener in a distinct moment of intima- cy, both cinematic and captivating, with a very personal vision of the Club and Dance Music as a keystone. Let’s give him the floor for just a few words:

“Unicorn Paranoïa was inspired by a kind of mental utopia that I have of the Club and the electronic music movement as a whole. What I’m trying to transcribe through those few tracks is a daydream that appears to me once in a while, of a New-York City street in the twilight of a starry night. This picture is for me an incarnation of these moments of escape, that I lived many times after every night where this idealized House and Techno movement got me dreaming. It’s that particular fantasy at work on the track Vivid Dreams, for instance. The music coming out of that record is without a doubt techno with raw character. Nevertheless, there is a subtler and more delicate aspect to it that reflects one of the angles of what I feel is my approach to music. My DJ sets, for example, tend to aim at length and progression rather than instantaneous efficiency. I apply myself to bring about contemplation and reverie, those fleeting moments when “the magic” briefly performs. Persistence Hunting and Unicorn Paranoia are a perfect realization of that illusion: the lengthy progression should guide the listener towards an inexplicable frenzy. A fictitious or real one ?

Hence the Unicorn… this mythical animal, visiting many an ephemeral dream sequence. Here, I intended to make a reference to several things: to the movie Blade Runner for instance, where dreams are an essential part of the intrigue, as they help determine the human or robotic nature of each character. Deckard dreams of the chimera many times, together with the movie’s enigma, rely on a unicorn-shaped origami. Dreams and Utopia have had a central role in this record’s composition. The Dream, this ultimate pleasure indulged by music, by the passion dedicated to it; and the Utopia (this of the club), which makes us continuously endure nostalgia, sadness, and sometimes even bitterness in that perpetual quest toward an experience that may be found only in The Very First Time”."

"The incessant brain bogglers zig-zag back to Diagonal with the nerve-gnawing acid pointillism of Right Frankfurt after a series of purple-themed 12”s with iDEAL and Hypermedium and the zinging Do These sessions with F.C.O.U. and Presto!?

Equivalent to an intravenous dose of acidic synthesis, Right Frankfurt nods to one of techno’s most efficient power centres with a PCP-on-Modafinil-strength reduction and concentration of early industrial techno tropes shorn of their skull-cracking beats and left to babble in an utterly alien coda.

It does so for 25 unrelenting minutes, which, if you asked my mum, all sounds the same. But, if you’ve ever appreciated the lissom fluidity of a strong acid or synth lead in the dance, you will notice and no doubt relish the piece’s tumultuous, microtonal variation, see-sawing up/down and around the frequency scale in highly visual knots that are perhaps best experienced in synch with the strobes of their live show.

We recently witnessed EVOL scare the bejesus into Berghain with this stuff, to the extent that there’s now a small cargo cult like gathering on the wastelands next door to the club who can do nowt but worship a discarded acid smiley keyring and speak in 303 tongues whilst cowering at the sight of Easyjets overhead.

God save the ravers."

Title:Good Luck

Format:2×LP
Label:Diagonal
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Electro, Industrial, Techno, Synth-Punk, New Wave, Electronica, Synth-Pop, Misc Italy
Price: €24,90 EU (incl. VAT) €20,92 non-EU

"Black vinyl edition, Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Artwork by Guy Featherstone.

Alessio Natalizia aka Not Waving rides the wave of a lifetime on his magnum opus, Good Luck.

The London-based Italian artist’s second album for Diagonal is an emotional but fiercely optimistic LP of skewed cathartic dance pop written in the midst of these dark and uncertain times. It represents the most ambitious album in his own unique catalogue, a discography that features acclaimed work as part of Banjo or Freakout and Kompakt techno duo Walls — plus half a decade spent at the axis of underground electronics via his own Ecstatic label and his recent, raved-up output for Diagonal.

This latest record sees Natalizia fine-tuning 20 years of recording and rave experience into a vibrant, pop-ready statement that’s never felt so necessary. It abandons the sensitive streak hinted at on Animals, his debut LP for Diagonal, to pursue a creative hunch for concision and social unity. This new perspective drives the album’s flux of emotions and guides what some may find to be a utopian outlook, wrapping his trademark experimental urges, clever song arrangements and winking edits in a larger narrative: a new system, if you like, that offers a way out of the contemporary condition towards something pure, sweaty and wild. After all, rave ‘floors were conceived for many as a way to forget/abandon the dark undercurrents of late 80s political turmoil. Good Luck does something similar.

The record is constructed as an album proper and follows a novel narrative: from the ego-pinching computer punk of Me Me Me, which jabs it into action, to the new wave thrust of Tool [I Don’t Give A Shit] and the ambient flush of Roll Along With The Pain Of It All [I’ll Text U], Natalizia clearly delights in taking us on a frenzied ride, but he never forgets his fondness for contemporary club culture [see the fulminating iridescent EBM-pop of Where Are We — with Montréalais minimal wave chanteuese Marie Davidson guesting on vocals — or the acidic punk jabs of Watch Yourself].

Good Luck is a thrillingly positive record — like a big slice of pink and blue sponge cake, it’s delicious, sweet, creamy and wonderful. And that’s the thing: even the title feels like a much-needed injection of optimism, a return to the utopian ideals of rave. Contemporary politics/culture/life/love/music/media seem to be infected by a feeling of impending dread — of fear, alienation, division. Perhaps it’s the job of artists to present an alternative vision for the world [and music] rather than simply to reflect one’s reality back into the echo chamber of their own lives. It feels like there's never been a more important time for a record like this."

"Sam Kerridge launches a major rethink of his style with the high-velocity tempos and razor-toothed bite of The Silence Between Us, new on Downwards.

Toiling somewhere between Ueno Masaaki’s Vortices for Raster-Noton, the pitching pelt of La Peste for Hangars Liquides, and the machine convulsions of Somatic Responses, he goes balls-to-the-wall with the breakneck momentum of Possession/Control, harnessing reverse-edited kicks, helter-skelter EBM bass and spectrographic noise ghouls in a surge of searing rave energy.

Flipside, those knotty, strobing pulses keen thru empty stomach inversions and bursts of tangled EBM synths on Ascension, which is effectively a snappier edit of the A-side, whilst Radical Possibilities of Pleasure sounds like a field recording from a french hardtek invaded by dildo dibble in choppers and riot gear railing lasers against any unlucky dancers."

Format:LP
Label:Ecstatic
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Breakbeats, Electro, Techno, Computer Music, Coldwave, Misc Berlin
Price: €19,90 EU (incl. VAT) €16,72 non-EU

To be played at either 33 or 45rpm.

"Berlin’s algorave maestro Nat Fowler aka Novo Line reprises the meter-messing genius of his Movements album with the Dyad mini LP - a brilliantly uncompromising follow-up for Ecstatic. Exclusively using the tools of ’88/’89 professional recording set-ups - namely the Atari ST, but with a slight algorithmic alteration.

While it’s increasingly hard to find new tricks in old gear, especially with the resurgence of hardware fetishism and the ubiquity of DAWs, that’s exactly what Nat Fowler has been doing for the best part of a decade as Novo Line. By, in his own words, “misusing one algorithmic composition program (not, by a longshot, a professional music production tool of any epoch) contained in 208kb of data on a 3.5” floppy disk”, Novo Line generates and explores new permutations of old music which, ironically enough, sound fresher or at least more innovative than a lot of new music in circulation right now.
Inputting ever-changing parameters of melody, and 29 year old algorithms, the machine’s voice is live-mixed and presented un-rendered as maxed-out waveforms via 1MB RAM, resulting in a severely compressed and combusting effect that leave mastering and sound engineers the world over scratching their heads in puzzlement. However, the effect is equally enthralling to anyone whose ears have become overly accustomed to contemporary emulations of ‘space’ in electronic music, and genuinely sound unique in relief of the contemporary field.

The release poses a playful question: can a record be ambivalent as to which speed it should be played? Celebrating vinyl and futhermore physical media, the listener is encouraged to find their exact speed of preference with the RPM toggle and pitch slider, that nearly forgotten joy in modifying speed in real time without a CPU mediating between the listener and sound; some tracks stumble heavily at 33rpm like boulders in the tumble dry, while others flash by at 45. In the taut, recoiling thud of Monad, thru the frenetic pop edit of Ennead to the ‘floor-curdling prong of Dyad Marcia on the front, to the forceful New Beat mutation Tetrad, and the mind bending Melpomenean Dyad which closes the LP, its some heavily challenging but deeply satisfying gear that seriously yet playfully messes with convention.

Essentially Novo Line is revelling in the pure spirit of computer music and the sonification of dance music as we know it - born in the ’88/’89 phenomenon of techno-house music, including its Industrial/EBM precedents, and its New Beat/Euro House offshoots - which have been sadly/mercifully overlooked in the hot pursuit of ‘progress’ over the years. And like John McCusker’s delectable artwork of a beige room and monitors interwoven with tubular, computer generated follies, Novo Line provides a captivating perspective in Dyad that short- circuits nostalgia’s illness to result in a killer vaccine against/for convention."

Bundle of 4 buddha machines of each colour for a discounted price!

"In 2005 the Beijing-based duo of Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian released their first “Buddha Machine” loop box, a quirky pocket sound system that propelled sound art into the consumer mainstream.

Over the past 12 years, they have released more than 6 different versions of their pioneering loop device, including collaborations with artists as diverse as industrial music pioneers Throbbing Gristle and American composer Philip Glass.

The original unit was long sold-out and in high demand among collectors. This 2017 edition of the Buddha Machine features the original loops in all their 8-bit Lo-Fi glory and comes in 4 soft-tone colours: red, blue, green and orange.

Since the beginnings of the Buddha Machine our motto has been "Soft Sound, Happy Life."

This re-issue of the original soundbox aims to be a calming, gentle voice for stressful, noisy times. The machine is designed to be played softly, at low volumes, allowing the loops to mix with the background sounds of your life and create a feeling of calm and ease.

The Buddha Machine is a truly unique musical device that prefers to sit in the background, quietly and gently working its sonic magic."

Title:Are We Now Here Or Nowhere?

Are We Now Here or Nowhere? presents Hey!zeus and Radimo, a duo who have teamed up to record an album that is an unconventional fusion of jazz and hip-hop. Radimo from the Champion Sound (formerly Prago Union support band) met
his producer and rapper in person for the first time a long time ago in London, and many years later recalls this meeting: "When I happened to meet Hey!zeus back in 2008 in the London Jazz Café, I did not have a clue that such a paramount connection was being born. This became clear after our first studio session. I have never experienced such creative freedom in terms of an instrumentalist-producer collaboration as with him. Most tracks were recorded on the first take, so the first thing that comes to me is recorded, the initial inspiration as it were, and in most cases, it also ended in this raw form on the track. Sometimes with crazy effects, other times in several layers." Their first track recorded together was Annunaki Ninja Trials, which was released in a digital form as early as 2011, revealing where their joint creative efforts were heading, i.e. combining free jazz and hip-hop with a more classic jazz form and a large dose of psychedelia.

It took six long years for the final version of the Are We Now Here or Nowhere? to see the light of day and the release of this original material can be seen as the natural outcome of this long-term collaboration. The album features several other excellent musicians. For example, Hey!zeus’s partner from Obba Supa (mostly recording for German labels such as Sichtexot and Project: Mooncircle) Teknical Development.IS; other unmistakable vocalists such as King Kashmere of Strange U and Stacy Epps who to date has released two albums, the Ruff Draft and The Awakening. Honza 'Watcha' Koukal is featured on bass guitar and Blue Daisy (real name Kwesi Darko) on keyboards, who has previously worked with Tricky and Snow Ghosts; the list of his remixes include items such as the hit Night Air by Jamie Woon and Stay The Same by Bonobo.

The basis of each fragment, as previously mentioned, was their jam sessions that were always recorded and followed
by the edge grinding stage. In addition to sound experimenting, the melodic preludes gradually came to the forefront, creating a form of bridging of these rumble loops. Radimo also played a wide range of wind instruments (alto and soprano saxophones, flutes) percussion, keyboard instruments while many sounds "came straight from his mouth" (voices, whistles). The electronics are really just an allusion that sort of hang around; even then individual tempos and beats were created in other ways than by programming. Are We Now Here or Nowhere? talks to the audience with sweeping instrumentation and the voices themselves (and not only those of the guest protagonists) of ten become another instrument used to create the final version of a given composition. Individual jazz forms blend into each other, from free variations through to contemporary cuttings right to the wood, the most traditional form. Their counterparts are the hip-hop building elements and Hey!zeuse’s studio work.

Are We Now Here or Nowhere? is an unconventional feat on the Czech music scene, with its mixes of various musical
forms and genres. The combination of the various parables of jazz, hip-hop, sampling, rap and vocal improvisation has clearly recognizable features of Radimo and Hey!zeus’s team - its sound experiment works on several levels at the same time. Radimo summed up the result of their creative period with these words: "I love his production style. It sounds totally organic, like a jazz drummer live, and yet it is so hip-hop and full of space. For me, personally, it is absolutely inspirational music. He is, without a doubt, my most favourite producer that I have worked with. He is the only one who lets me to do anything in the studio, the craziest stuff I can think of. And the best part of it? He likes it!" So, there is a lot to look forward to."

"Very industrial and heavy, certainly no manierism of 'techno music' anymore, but rather transcended into 'phenomenai' of the fearful 'Kosmos', tragic Ouranos' 'Pankration', all that seems to manifest both wave and particle properties, as apparantly the right block of 'Parian marble' had been provided, already containing the very statue itself inside it, for the old, yet merciless tape and tube mastering machines that simply generate 'Xaos', this elusive and inscrutable 'quantum-engineering' process of 'Natura ex Machina', and that, guided by Providence herself, 'chiseled away like old Praxiteles the soft flesh of the 'kouros' until the bare shapes, 'ideai' of things finally came discovered and exposed' to the human ear and body, simply allowing the sound to 'fall right into its proper natural space form' or, perhaps, like in 'La Divina Commedia' our sad Poet Laureate in Purgatory did wonder: 'Poi s'ascose nel foco che li affina', 'Then hid him in the Fire that purifies them'."

Title:Movement Building Vol. 3
Artist:Gabriel Saloman
Format:LP
Label:Shelter Press
Genre:
Experimental Electronic, Ambient, Post-Rock
Price: €18,50 EU (incl. VAT) €15,55 non-EU

"Shelter Press has made good on its promise to deliver the third and final volume of its series featuring Gabriel Saloman, released both on vinyl and collected with Movement Building Vol. I (2014) and Vol. II (2015) as a double CD. For fans of Saloman’s post-Yellow Swans work – an already dense catalog of darkly cinematic compositions mostly conceived as accompaniment to some of Vancouver’s edgier contemporary dance companies, Movement Building Vol. III is not only a much anticipated conclusion to this trilogy, it is the most fully realized album in years. Where as Movement Building Vol. I & II acted primarily as documentation of time-based artworks, Movement Building Vol. III offers a more coherent and narratively rich album that will appeal to admirers of Soldier’s Requiem (Miasmah, 2013).

Listeners will recognize the emotive bowed strings, militant percussion and searing guitar eruptions that evoked memory and trauma in that previous album. Joining this pallet are other familiar Saloman sounds: shoegaze washes of distorted guitar, minimalist piano attacks, melancholic appregiated melodies, and a patina of harsh noise. Added to this is a more 21st Century approach to drums and bass, perhaps an effect of his collaborations with producer Michael Red in their dub-ambient project Chambers.

Saloman’s music has never sat comfortably in any genre, sharing with a select cohort of other artists (Stephen O’Malley, Lawrence English, Grouper, Kreng, Tim Hecker, among others) an ambiguous position between “modern classical”, “electronic music”, and the more outer limits of metal. Movement Building Vol. III doesn’t clarify as much as it expands Saloman’s oeuvre further into an idiosyncratic musical no-man’s land that fails to be faithful to any popular musical trend – contemporary, retro or futurist.

Movement Building Vol. III’s themes are taken from the dance it was composed for, 2015’s What Belongs To You, created by longtime collaborator Vanessa Goodman (Adhere, Soldier’s Requiem). That work sent its dancers through a physical journey exploring the needs of the body, for shelter, for love and for self-actualization, roughly aligned to Abraham Maslow’s “hierarchy of needs”. The resulting album seems to achingly soundtrack the struggle for survival, not simply for bare life but for something greater and more transcendent that would make survival have meaning. It holds dread and hope in equal parts, never quite giving away the end of the story. Though this record was recorded two years ago Movement Building Vol. III could be the perfect album for our current era of civilizational near-collapse, whether at the hands of maniacal politicians, the slow burn of the Anthropocene or the constant enclosure of the corporate driven, social media enabled surveillance state.

Movement Building Vol. III arrives both as a stand alone vinyl release, and as part of a collection of all three volumes packaged in one double CD. The collection of these works allows one to see clearly Saloman’s techniques and approaches to a relatively limited number of instruments – guitar, percussion, occasional piano and tape. Movement Building Vol. I is presented as one continuous piece, moving through an extended set of drone and loping drum play before climaxing in the kind of glorious guitar chording most often associated with My Bloody Valentine, GSYBE or Mono. Movement Building Vol. II explores various combinations of drum and drone, ASMR inducing high end clatter and the now infamous take on Miles Davis’ classic My Funny Valentine. The digital versions of these albums, mastered by Helmut Erler at Berlin’s Dubplates & Mastering, restore to them their full range of frequency and dynamics, providing a deeper glimpse into the theatrical origins of their composition.

Movement Building Vol. III is not only the final installment in Shelter Press’ series but also represents the culmination of a prolific period of creation for Saloman that began with 2012’s Adhere. From 2011-2016, Saloman produced dozens of recordings in collaboration with various dance artists. Currently living in Santa Cruz, California, and working on a PhD concerning noise and protest, it’s unclear how a new home and a new political reality will shape the music he makes next. One thing is for certain: it’s unlikely that Saloman will be silent for long."

Price: €12,90 EU (incl. VAT) €10,84 non-EU

"Egyptian producer ZULI makes a stunning 2nd mark on Lee Gamble’s UIQ with Numbers, a ruggedly chopped but spatially hypersensitive suite of encrypted electronic rhythms and entrancing, mirage-like geometries.

Boldly committed to his own niche between the folds of grime, techno and electro-acoustic dimensions, ZULI’s follow-up to the Bionic Ahmed EP pushes it’s loping designs into stranger, psychoacoustic spaces within the sound field, finding an idiosyncratic ecology or democracy of frequency that finds room for dense, physical subbass, surreally smeared vocals and coruscating, iridescent motifs amid its morphing dimensions.

The six tracks exemplify ZULI’s playfully paradoxical approach to club music, experimenting with tessellating dry and fluid textures in the dusty, humid London-via-Cairo swerve of Bow which cranks opens the EP, to investigate metastable techno momentum in the buckling rolige of CommProto, while She’s Hearing Voices feels like a smoking area between rooms, heard in a queasy but lushly spangled state.

That all feels like preparation for the 2nd wind of the B-side, which convulses into action with the chromatic trance warp of What You Do and its grubbing Autechrian inversion, Tongue Chomper, only to slide off the page in Foam Home’s future primordial glob of melted dancehall.

The hooks may be less explicit or tangible here than on ZULI’s debut EP, but Numbers is proof, if needed, of a restless mind which is only just coming into its own."

Released August 3, 2017.

"Whatever Makes You Feel Safe is a collaboration EP between Canadian producer and singer Marie Davidson and Berlin-based sound designer Invisible Church.
Marie Davidson needs no introduction. Around since 2012, her latest album Adieux Au Dancefloor on Veronica Vasicka's Cititrax brought her to the worldwide attention she deserves.
Invisible Church is Ukrainian but currently Berlin-based sound designer.
His sound is built around massive analog synthesizers carefully blended with raw field recordings and aggressive percussions.
They met in Montreal during Red Bull Music Academy festival and shared the idea of exploring the concept of feeling safe both on a personal level and as a part of the society.
This EP starts with a heavy cinematic Collage then continues with tense rhythmical Never Release the Tension and ends with a 10-minute healing ambient piece Ten Years where you can also hear live symbals played by Theo Parrish."
